VLN 9 will certainly be my last VLN this season, as it’s the last race of the season!! Another late call from Mühlner to drive again in the #969 Porsche Cayman in the CUP3 class, this time together with Michael Rebhan as teammate. Unfortunately on Friday I had to skip free practice as I was busy in Hockenheim so this meant I would do my first laps directly in qualifying. Strategy was to go out early to beat the incoming rain, trouble was that having rained in the night the track was still damp when I went out. Nevertheless I felt pretty comfortable and tried to push and maximise the chance and clocked in an 8:44 that was good enough for pole position with almost 10 seconds advantage! For the race, Michael would be running the start and second stint, basically the first two hours of racing, with me jumping in to drive the second half. Some rain came down and this meant Michael started with rain tires but the track soon proved almost dry. In such mixed conditions he did a good job staying out of trouble and by the end of his second stint we were sitting P6 some 4m30s behind P1. Clearly, winning was difficult at this point but I jumped in and pushed as much as I could for the remaining two hours, setting the fastest race lap and recovering in excess of 1m30s to P1 finally finishing P3 some 3m behind. Was a great weekend and once again we showed an amazing team performance! Was very cool to finish the VLN season with two really good races, lots of fun! Let’s see what 2018 brings!
